Yogi Bhajan taught far more than just physical yoga postures and mantras.  He shared a body of teachings ranging from the physical to the spiritual, knowing that human beings are complex beings made of many systems.  In addition to yoga and meditation, he shared lifestyle suggestions that would compliment the yoga practice and elevate us on our journey.  These lifestyle tips included nutritional information and recipes that would strengthen and purify our physical bodies.  While it’s certainly not required to follow Yogi Bhajan’s nutritional suggestions to benefit from Kundalini yoga, incorporating some of his advice and trying out yogi recipes can be a way to enhance our health and yoga practice.

For women in particular, our bodies can seem like complex machines without instruction manuals.  Our hormones and moods can shift like the wind, difficult to pin down or control.  A regular yoga and meditation practice can help to smooth out the rough edges, and a healthy diet can go a long way towards helping to keep us regulated from the inside-out.  In particular, Yogi Bhajan recommended that women eat eggplants.  He taught they that they are the perfect food for women, providing nourishment to the reproductive system and a balancing effect on the hormones.  The I Am A Woman reader gives a delicious recipe for Eggplant Pakoras, and suggests that eating the dish once a day in the week before menstruation can provide a noticeable improvement in health and cycle regularity.

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1 eggplant
  • 2 cups of Garbanzo flour
  • 1Tbsp. Caraway seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 2tsp Turmeric
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup Onion juice or puree
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup honey

Slice the eggplant approximately 3/8″ thick, and set aside.  Mix the carraway seeds and your spices with the garbanzo flour, then add the onion juice and milk and stir into a smooth paste.   Make sure to mix thoroughly so there are no lumps.  Dip your eggplant slices into the batter, and then fry in oil or ghee until they are golden brown.  Drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil, and serve with chutney or your preferred condiments.  This recipe will serve 4-6 people.

Once your menstrual cycle begins, Yogi Bhajan also recommended that women eat sauteed almonds with honey during the first 3 days.  You can saute the almonds in sesame or almond oil, and then eat them warm.  Or you can make a batch and save them for a morning snack.

If you have an irregular menstrual cycle, you might also try the meditation “Breath Ryhthm to Regulate the Menstrual Cycle” found in the I Am A Woman yoga manual.  This simple meditation uses breath, mudra, and mantra to bring the pituitary and pineal glands into balance, as well as erasing negative thought patterns and clearing the aura.
