For women in particular, our bodies can seem like complex machines without instruction manuals.  Our hormones and moods can shift like the wind, difficult to pin down or control.  A regular yoga and meditation practice can help to smooth out the rough edges, and a healthy diet can go a long way towards helping to keep us regulated from the inside-out.  In ancient Indian home remedies, it is recommended that women eat eggplants.  They are believed to be the perfect food for women, providing nourishment to the reproductive system and a balancing effect on the hormones. Here is a delicious recipe for Eggplant Pakoras.  Eggplant is great to eat the week before menstruation to help provide a noticeable improvement in health and cycle regularity.

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1 large eggplant
  • 2 cups of Garbanzo flour
  • 1Tbsp. Caraway seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • 2tsp Turmeric
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup Coconut milk
  • 3/4 cup puree
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Slice the eggplant into 1/2″ slices.  Sprinkle rock salt on top to absorb extra liquid to avoid the eggplant being slimy and let sit.  Mix the spices with the garbanzo flour, then add the onion puree and coconut milk and stir until smooth.   Make sure there are no lumps.  Brush the rock salt off the eggplant slices.  Dip your eggplant slices into the batter, and then fry in oil or ghee until they are golden brown.  Drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil, and serve with chutney or your preferred condiments.  This recipe will serve 4-6 people.
