It is a well-known phenomenon that women’s bodies are closely tied with the cycles of the moon. A woman’s reproductive system and menstrual cycle (and of course her emotional moods) wax and wane along with the moon, but for thousands of years, yogis have known that the connection between a woman and the moon is more deep and more complex than meets the eye.
According to ancient yogic teachings, women have what are known as moon centers (11 to be exact). These moon centers are associated with specific body parts. As she moves through the month, her moon center of influence, the one she is ‘in’, shifts too, changing how she perceives and processes the world around her. A woman’s moon pattern is unique to her (it is said to develop in the womb), so she can move through the 11 moon centers in any way. Each 2 1/2 days, a woman moves into a new moon center. As a woman’s moon center changes, so too does her mood.
Understanding your moon centers and mapping them can help make sense of a woman’s changing emotions. How do you map your moon centers? Through careful observation. Take a calendar and mark down where you think you might be and observe any changes. If you are in a relationship, you might ask your partner to help you. Over time, you’ll understand more about yourself and your nature and be able to navigate your changes with more ease. Need to be confident in a meeting? Don’t schedule it while your moon center is in your belly button, for example, or know to compensate with meditations for confidence and strength.
Ultimately, all of Kundalini yoga is about getting to know yourself better. Now you can get to know your moon centers better too!
