Relationship difficultiesLet’s face it. No matter how spiritual you are, it takes work to maintain a strong and loving relationship. There will always be times when you don’t see perfectly eye to eye, when you lose the ability to listen and see where your partner is coming from. In these moments, you are not a single unit of energy. But have no fear, you are human, and this disconnect can be remedied!

This meditation is said to practically alter the relationship between finite/individual and infinite consciousness. Rather than dividing into individual vibrations, Yogi Bhajan said this exercise will “create an equilibrium with the infinite self.”

Practice this meditation in dyads (pairs of two). When talking — or fighting — simply doesn’t work anymore, sit 4 to 5 feet across from your partner and prepare to shift your consciousness. With deep and powerful breaths, begin to alternately chant the mantra “Wahe Guru.” Listen to each other.

Yogi Bhajan said, “If the sound is correct, it will penetrate the skull and seem to be inside you. This will break the spell of intolerance and confusion and disperse any latent anger. Ending an argument this way will maintain peace in the subconscious realms so you do not carry the dispute into unrelated areas and times of your relationship…The mental frame from which you see yourself and the world will be totally shifted within and without by this exercise.”

Meditation to Transcend Individual Consciousness and Anger

Posture: Sit in Easy Pose with the spine straight facing your partner.Screen Shot 2017-02-16 at 3.23.26 PM

Eye Focus: Eyes are closed.

Mudra: Make fists of both hands and extend and press the thumb tips together with the palms facing away from you. Place the mudra 6 to 8 inches in front of the Brow Point. Press the thumb tips together firmly until they become white; there is no need to press very hard. It is important to let the joint of the thumb bend as much as possible.

Mantra: Chant Wahe Guru. Inhale deeply and exhale the breath quickly and powerfully as you chant Wahe Guru. The sound should be at as high a velocity or frequency as possible. The pitch will be high and vibrate through the nose and Brow Point as you chant Guru. The mantra should be paced such that Wahe is about 1 second and Guru is about 7 seconds. Take a deep breath and repeat the mantra rhythmically.
