This beautiful poem by the great Sufi poet Rumi reminds us the power of the “amrit vela“, the ambrosial hours before dawn when our meditation can be most effective.  Every person struggles with the inner voice that tells them to go back to sleep instead of waking up and beginning the day in sadhana, or spiritual practice.  Let the power of Rumi’s voice convince you…don’t go back to sleep!

The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you
Don’t go back to sleep
You must ask for what you really want
Don’t go back to sleep
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
Where the two worlds meet
The door is round and open
Don’t go back to sleep
