Another year is coming to a close— the days are growing shorter, the nights longer, the rain and snow become ever more present in our way of life and the darkness more and more apparent. For whatever this year has been for you, whether full of joy and abundance, sadness and longing, transformation or stillness, we come together on the solstice to remember our own light and to spread it to others.

On the winter solstice here in Berkeley, California, my family and friends have had a tradition of lighting candles and singing a simple song for our selves, for each other, and for the planet. We take turns lighting the candles, one by one honoring everyone else’s light and the collective luminance that we create by shining together.

On this solstice, I invite you to honor yourself for all that you are, for every step that you have taken this year— remember where you were last year and look where you are now. Look at the roads that you have traveled and all that has come to pass. And I invite you to honor everyone else who has walked alongside of you to create this magnificent world, whether they are present or have passed.

*On The Longest Night of The Year

On the longest night of the year
I will light a candle for you
On the longest night of the year
You will light a candle for me
And together they will shine
They will shine
Through the night
And together they will shine
They will shine
Through the night.
