The Spring Equinox arrived today! Plants and animals alike are coming back to life as the days are getting a little longer. Many spiritual paths throughout the ages celebrated this time. This holi-day has been celebrated as a time of cleansing, fertility and rebirth.

During the Spring Equinox, the Celts in Europe celebrated the goddess, Eastre (aka Ostara). She is typically pictured carrying a rabbit and eggs which are symbols for fertility and birth. The Mayans in South America have also been known for their reverence of the equinox. In Mexico, they constructed the Temple of Kukulkan, which was designed in such a way so that only on the equinoxes the sun creates an image on the temple of a serpent. Snakes have long been a symbol of transformation and rebirth.

Spring Equinox has long been celebrated by our ancestors and this special time still carries a significance today. As spring arrives, we awaken from our hibernation in winter to plant the seeds of our intentions for the year.

Spring Equinox is a great time to start a new kriya or meditation to take advantage of the energy of spring. Set your intentions that you want to plant in meditation and then ask to see the obstacles that stand in the way. Watch what comes up as you do your kriyas and meditations. Also remember the seeds will not grow when you dig them up to check if they are making progress. When we plant our seeds, we just need to remember to water daily (practice your personal Sadhana daily) and allow it to grow.

To create a foundation for change, we must first do some ‘spring cleaning’ internally. Spring the time to clean out all that isn’t you and all that separates you from your destiny. Here are a few meditation and kriyas to help facilitate detoxification and rebirth this spring:

DETOXIFYING YOGA

Here is a great physical kriya for cleaning out the body:

“Detoxification” from the manual Self-Experience – Originally Taught May 29, 1984

1. Lie down on your back with your legs straight. Your heels are together and your toes point upward. Keeping your heels together, spread your feet apart so that they both point out to the sides. The right foot points to the right and the left foot points to the left. Then close your feet so they once again point straight upward. Continue quickly opening and closing your feet, keeping your heels together. 4 Minutes.

“We detoxify continuously throughout life. We process food, thoughts, and all forms of energy. When that flow is continuous and clear, we are steady and flexible. The trouble is that we accumulate more than we process. We become weighted down under the ash of metabolism and the remnants of old emotions. This set systematically moves the energy of the body and mind to keep you light and vitalized.” Gurucharan Singh Khalsa

2. Remain on your back and put your hands under your head. Raise your legs up about two feet and scissor the legs up and down without letting the descending heel touch the ground. Keep your legs straight, do not bend at the knees. This exercise clears up inner anger when done vigorously. 4 Minutes.

3. Lie down on your stomach and stick out your tongue. Exhale through your mouth and push up into Cobra Pose. Inhale through your mouth as you lower yourself back to the ground. Continue, keeping your breath and movement strong. This exercise removes toxins from the body. 6 1/2 Minutes.

4. Turn over on your back and bring your knees up to your chest. As the knees touch the chest, raise your arms up to 90 degrees (parallel to each other). Straighten your legs and lower your arms and legs back to the floor at the same time. Continue this movement vigorously. 3 Minutes. This is a controlled movement. There should be no noise when the arms and legs touch the ground.

5. Sit in Easy Pose and revolve the torso around the base of the spine. This churning movement is done in a counter-clockwise direction. Move as quickly as you can during the last minute. 3 Minutes.

6. Stand up. Bend over and grab your ankles. While holding onto your ankles, sit down in Crow Pose and come back up. Continue this movement for 2 Minutes.

7. Sit comfortably in Easy Pose with your spine straight. Chant “Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Wahe Guru”. (One full repetition of the mantra takes 7-8 seconds.) 11 Minutes.

8. To finish: Inhale deeply and stretch your arms over your head with your palms touching. Hold your breath 20-40 seconds as you stretch your spine upward. Exhale. Repeat this sequence two more times.

DETOXIFYING MEDITATION

Meditation is a great way to purify the psyche. Here is a great detoxing meditation:

Mahan Gyan Agni Pranayam from Transformation, Volume I: Mastering the Self – Originally Taught May 20, 1976

Sit in a comfortable meditative posture, with the spine straight, chin in and chest out.

Mudra: Cup the hands at the heart level with the fingertips touching. The hands make a “little boat.” Make sure that the outsides of the hands from the Mercury (pinkie) fingers all the way to the base of the palms are touching as much as possible. Place the thumbs just inside the hands and bend them down at the knuckles ninety degrees. The thumbs touch each other and you hands. It is a snug position.

Eyes: Closed.

Chant: Inhale deeply and chant in a monotone, eight times in one breath:

Ek Ong Kaar
Sat Gur Prasaad
Sat Gur Prasaad
Ek Ong Kaar

Time: Begin by practicing this kriya for 11 minutes and slowly build up to 31 minutes.

This is a very powerful kriya. Maha Gyan means “the great knowledge.” Agni means “purity of fire.” Practice this kriya unto that Infinity of God.

REBIRTHING

The Rebirthing Manual is an excellent resource filled with kriyas for cleaning the subconscious, dropping past memories and even removing fears from the womb. This is a great overall manual to practice kriyas for awakening into your authentic self. Try kriyas such as, “Renewed Self-Concept,” “Housecleaning I” or “Unloading the Subconscious.”

Also during this time you may want to consider going on a cleanse or fast. It is especially important to do this when you intend to consciously look at your obstacles. When many people do this they want to run away by partaking in unconscious activities such making poor food choices, abusing drugs or alcohol, etc. Practicing a cleanse or fast can help you navigate murky waters with both eyes open.
