An addiction is any behavior you cannot stop on command. You can be addicted to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, relationships, certain kinds of foods, television, computers, social media, lying, boasting–almost anything can become an addiction. People are becoming more addicted to things because of stress.
Stress and the inability to deal with the pressure of the times are killing us. We look externally to compensate for the strength and vitality that is lacking within. The “Age of Computers” is bombarding our psyches and we look for quick fixes that are momentary and that take a toll on our body and mind.
We live in a pill-popping society and we look for overnight fixes and strong sensations. Many of us do not have the strength and stamina to sustain and carry out our intentions. Kundalini Yoga strengthens the nervous system, which becomes disabled with drugs, stress, junk food, etc. A weakened nervous system places us in a handicapped situation and creates a vulnerability to temptation. Yoga strengthens the nerves, balances the glandular system (which is the guardian of health), and enables the entire endocrine system to function optimally, giving long term ability to be non-reactive and deal effectively with the pressures of the times. The practice of meditation helps the psychological addictive patterning and mind set, enables greater focus and clarity, and develops inner strength and emotional stability.
The goal in yoga is to exalt the self and raise the level of awareness or consciousness. The neuron patterning of the brain can be changed. But a person cannot change and sustain the change until he’s had an experience of a higher state of awareness. Kundalini Yoga, meditation, chanting and mantra specifically provide an opportunity to recalibrate the imprinting of addictive patterning on the brain.
Enhanced nutrition is key in cleansing toxic overload of the body and rebuilding the depleted system. This helps to re-energize, balance and increase vitality from within to meet the challenges and tests of everyday life.
Who is not without problems and challenges? It’s how we deal with them. Everyone has the right to be happy. We want to give hope and support to those bogged down by the undertow of life. We carry a person on our back until he can support himself. He has just not had the opportunity to know any other way. Once he has an experience of hope–that he can change, he has the right to change, and he has the right to be happy–once he is reminded that God dwells within the silence of his heart and in the breath of life, he will be absolutely fine, perfect!
The following exercise is an effective way to deal with the challenges of life and stress, and to have an experience of the breath of life:
Sit up straight and inhale for 5 seconds, hold the breath for 5 seconds, and slowly exhale for 5 seconds. Continue this breathing pattern. Practice for 3 minutes and slowly increase the time to 5, 11 and eventually 31 minutes a day. It will increase oxygen to the brain, increase lung capacity, allow the mind to quiet and the body to relax and be at peace.
