In the tradition of Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, we are each our own teacher. The throat chakra is the center of the teacher where we can find healthy, authentic self-expression. Our most important power is the spoken word, both what and how we speak. Our ugly words and positive praises have equal everlasting effects. We must use grace and not negativity in our communications with ourselves and others. When we are strongly connected to our fifth chakra energy, we gain the perception of subtlety. With this perception we always hear and speak the Truth. We also gain a state of openness in which we see life as a provider of experiences that lead us to a greater understanding. Once our throat chakra energy is awakened, we find ourselves allowing things to happen as they should. We stop avoiding the unpleasant aspects of life because we realize that they are part of a greater whole. A sincere practice of Kundalini Yoga can help us skillfully utilize our throat chakra energies and continue to move toward the realm of the higher chakras.
Physically, the throat chakra is connected to the trachea, cervical vertebrae, thyroid, parathyroid, neck, shoulders, brain stem, throat and hearing. The tradition of Kundalini Yoga teaches how we may experience problems with these physical areas if we are disconnected from our throat chakra energies. We might also feel lethargic and less youthful as we experience imbalances in our metabolism and calcium levels. Through adjustment of the metabolism, we can remove many undesirable effects on the body. A great Kundalini Yoga kriya for the metabolism is called “Kriya to Make Your Skin Radiant” from the I Am A Woman Yoga Manual. Don’t worry, men can do this kriya too!
Vishuddha means “purification”. In this chakra, we can literally purify language, knowledge and communication. We contain a faculty of higher discrimination in the throat chakra. When we are strongly aware of the fifth chakra energies, we easily discriminate Truth from all communications with others and ourselves. We also identify authentic knowledge with ease. In the tradition of Kundalini Yoga, we use mantra and sound to stimulate the throat chakra. With these vibratory tools we are able to encourage healthy self-expression and inspirational communication. Where we might have had trouble with shyness or speaking too bluntly before, we now communicate harmoniously and are listened to as an authoritative voice. One of the best Kundalini Yoga mantras for the throat chakra is “Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Sat Nam, Wahe Guru”. The mantra combines the seed (bij) of full knowledge “Sat Nam” with the Infinite teacher of the soul “Wahe Guru”. Chanting this helps us master the Word, where our tongue and God’s tongue are one, plus the skill of allowing our soul to initiate all actions.
Through the fifth chakra we enter into the realm of the miraculous and mysterious. This is where the process of manifestation begins. The throat chakra is where the seed of inspiration exists before we begin to pull upon the energies of the first four chakras to bring our vision to life. Being in touch with our throat chakra allows us to courageously plant seeds of creative self-expression and easily envision the fruits of the seeds. Our lives become a work of art. “Naad Meditation: to Communicate from Totality” is an excellent Kundalini Yoga kriya from The Mind – It’s Projections and Multiple Facets for this aspect. Another wonderful Kundalini Yoga kriya to use is the “Seven Wave Sat Nam Meditation” which can be found in the amazing collection called Transformation Volume One. If you are looking for a quick throat chakra pick-me-up, try a few minutes of the following Kundalini Yoga postures:
Neck Lock – Sitting with a tall straight spine, lift the chest upward and gently stretch the back of the neck by pulling the chin toward the back of the neck. The muscles of the neck and face stay relaxed as the posture is achieved by the shift of relative position of the chin and chest. The head stays level and centered. Breathe long and deep while meditating at the center of the throat.
Neck Rolls – Sitting in easy pose or on the heels, lengthen the neck with neck lock and as you inhale let the head lean back, exhale to bring the head around and to the front then inhale it around and to the back. Continuing to make circles with the neck. Be gentle and feel the roll rooted at the heart center.
Shoulder Stand – From lying on the back, exhale and begin to engage all the muscles. Bend the knees and use the strength of your core to curl them in toward your chest. Place the hands on the hips just below the waist and start to bring the hips and legs up to a vertical position. Keep the elbows moving toward each other. Allow the chin to be slightly lifted away from the chest and be sure your weight is supported by your shoulders, not the neck. Breathe deeply.
