What are you most looking forward to sharing at Sat Nam Fest West 2015?

I have the great blessing and gift to once again play music and crystal bowls alongside Ramdesh Kaur for a workshop. Every time Ramdesh and I work together, it is pure joy for me. There is a flow and quiet telepathic knowingness between us that is utterly exquisite and sublime. The bowls, the sounds, the chanting, the yoga, the music — everything gets heightened and intensified in a beautiful, light filled way.

I can literally see people transform before my eyes and I’m so grateful to be part of that process.

This year, I’ve also been invited to offer a crystal bowl sound healing meditation for everyone on Friday evening.  I’ll be playing with harpist Wendy Tahara, and the sound of bowls and harps together just takes my breath away.

I burst into tears the first time Wendy and I played together — that’s how much it affected me.  It’s going to be just gorgeous! Imagine after a long day of yoga and chanting, being serenaded to sleep by the sound of the angels — that’s exactly what it’s going to be like!

What has been your most profound, most memorable Sat Nam Fest experience?

The first time I did a concert at Sat Nam Fest was on an Easter weekend. I was inspired to sing the Lord’s Prayer in the original Aramaic and to integrate the end of the Mul Mantra into it.  For me, singing these holy words blended together, in this sacred environment, during Easter felt so significant.

Looking out into a sea of shining, luminous faces, bringing together Christian and Sikh in one holy sound, was profound and moving to my soul.  It’s been three years and people still come up to me to talk about that moment because it touched the hearts of all of us who were there.

For me, it is a perfect example of what Sat Nam Fest is all about — bringing together people from all different backgrounds through music and yoga to remember and feel our oneness and our unity.

Why do you think people should attend Sat Nam Fest West 2015?

Because it will change your life for the better.  The people you will meet, the yoga practice, the sound current, the consciousness is so luscious and beautiful you will feel transformed, uplifted and return to the the world a shinier and more luminous “you”.

It’s such a good way to be good to yourself and take care of “you” and at the same time be part of creating that luminous field of energy with an amazing group of like-minded souls.

What would you say to encourage someone who’s feeling the inner call to attend, but has never been to a Sat Nam Fest, and is concerned about whether or not they’ll fit in?

Whenever we seek to become more of the “truth” of who we are, we are stepping out of our comfort zones and stepping into the unknown. Be brave! Dare to become more of who you are.  Don’t worry about what other people think of you; come for yourself and let the magic  happen. You’ll be so happy you did.

What is your favorite yummy yogi juice blend?

Green smoothies!!!!!!! My husband and I make them every morning and I love, love, love my green smoothies!

What is your most deeply loved morning sadhana practice?

Japji and reading from the Guru.

Most meaningful musical influence?

My voice teacher, Elana Joan Cara. Her teaching changed my life on so many levels.

Vocally, spiritually, emotionally, personally — I cannot even begin to count the ways. She made her transition last year and I miss her very, very much. Every time I sing, I feel her presence.  If I have touched even one person’s heart with my music, it is because of her love and teaching.

Which meditation are you doing right now?

Kirtan Kriya

What’s playing on your music device right now?

Nirinjan’s Prem Siri. I can often hear her singing in my head, “if you don’t see god in all, then you don’t see god at all.”  That’s my favorite quote from Yogiji, and i love the way she adapted it and wove it into a song.

Share a profound practice or music creation experience with us?

One of the most profound experiences happened during the recording process of “The Embrace.”  I was utterly in the zone and felt surrounded by what seemed to be a galaxy of angelic light beings.  Everything went golden and I could feel, literally, their arms holding me and yet they were above me.  So much love.  So much compassion.  So much immense beauty.  I believe people feel this when they listen to the song and that’s why it is healing for so many.

Best advice or insight for a new yogi?

Follow your passion, always listen to your heart and stay true to what is real for you.

What’s the most treasured spiritual inspiration book in your library?

Hands down, “Autobiography of a Yogi.”  That book changed my life and I think I’ve read it at least 4 or 5 times. If I could take only one book with me on a desert island, that would be the one.

Could you please give us a sneak peek into your creative process?

Journaling. It’s the best thing for me to get my creative juices going. And honestly, a lot of my songs have come to me while showering or in the bathtub.  Being near or in water turns on the right brain and gets everything flowing.

How did you come to Kundalini yoga and sacred chant music…Or how did they come to you?

I was living in Santa Fe, NM for about three years and working equidistantly between Santa Fe and Los Alamos.  To make commuting easier, I decided to live outside of Española. Around that time, one of my spiritual mentors suggested that I try Kundalini Yoga.

I did a little research and lo and behold, I discovered I was living 4 miles down the road from  Yogi Bhajan’s house and the center of Kundalini Yoga in the west!!  Every time I think of this, it never ceases to amaze me. I started classes at Yoga Southwest and was in love from the first day.

It was in my classes there that I discovered Snatam’s music and was inspired to reach out to Snatam’s producer, Thomas Barquee, to ask about the possibility of working with him to record my first album.  Now, Thomas and I have done 6 projects together and are about to begin our seventh.  Kundalini Yoga has brought so much good, so much grace into my life. I feel very blessed indeed.

If you could only practice one kriya for the rest of your days, which would it be and why?

It would  be Kirtan Kriya. It is so simple and direct. I can feel it balance my brain and create a space of calmness and peace. When I walk, when I breathe, when I am at rest or in conversation, I can hear and feel the mantra chanting underneath it all.  So no matter what situation I find myself in, Sa Ta Na Ma is vibrating.

Share what’s new and up and coming for you?

This year has a lot of international travel to offer concerts, workshops and intensive healing retreats alongside my husband, James, who is a Native Hawaiian healing practitioner.

We are going to Peru, back to Japan for the fourth time, and to Brazil for the first time, plus  concerts and crystalline activations in the United States.

And, I am very excited about going back into the studio to create more music with Thomas Barquee, which will be along the lines of “Jewels of Silence”.  So many people have been asking us for more — well, i can tell you now that “it’s coming, soon!!!”

Anything else you’d love all future Sat Nam Fest’ers to know?!

See you there! And when you see us walking around, be sure to come up and say “Hi”. We love meeting you!

“When I first listened to Ashana’s CD,

All Is Forgiven, my husband and I were driving in the car. I was thankful that I was in the passenger’s seat, because all I could do was just close my eyes and be taken into the heavenly sounds. I noticed that my breathing actually slowed down, and I felt as if I was being taken into a beautiful place in my heart that was being awakened by Ashana’s serene vocals, and the sacred bowls that she plays. Ashana’s music is light and beautiful… but takes you right into your heart… where all is forgiven.

– Snatam Kaur

“Listening to Ashana’s CD, The Infinite Heart feels like entering a beautiful cathedral of perfect harmony and peace.”

– Mirabai Ceiba
