We’re thrilled to have Simran and GuruPrem on our roster of master teachers for our flagship 40-day online course The Fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga. In their lesson in Week 2 of the curriculum, they offer practical techniques to finding a comfortable seat for meditation, a detailed discussion of the bandhas, Sat Kriya instruction, and tricks to optimize Breath of Fire.
What led you to Kundalini Yoga? How did you discover this practice?
My parents both practiced Kundalini Yoga and were teaching in Brooklyn, NY. They are now co-owners of Kundalini Yoga East in New York City. I was brought up under the watchful eye of Yogi Bhajan. My mother used the techniques that he taught on how to raise a child of consciousness. I also had the opportunity to do yoga and meditation from a very young age.
How has Kundalini Yoga changed your life?
It has allowed me to live healthy, happy, and holy, recognize my soul’s calling, and live truthfully and in service to help others live in their truth.
What pranayam, kriya, or meditation do you find yourself always coming back to in your personal practice? Why?
Morning Call: Long Ek Ong Kars. To me, this is an elemental and fundamental practice that feels right on so many levels. When I practice it, I like to imagine that I am in a large group of people, and we are creating a collective sound. I also have fond memories of it from my childhood, being in Sadhana early in the morning and everyone chanting it.
From your perspective, how is Kundalini Yoga different than other forms of yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is the whole kit n’ caboodle. It is a complete practice that gets me on the physical, mental, and soul level. Kundalini Yoga asks me to always be looking at my thoughts, words, and deeds, and it gives me tools to change when they are not in alignment with my higher consciousness. I like the constant reminder of living truthfully – with “Sat Nam” at each breath, my true identity is unchanging and infinite.
Why do you think learning the fundamentals of this practice is so important?
I have had so many people take a class or course with me and say, “Why didn’t I learn this when I first started?” As with anything, the best way to begin is with setting a good foundation, using correct techniques, and growing from there. No matter what ‘level’ of practice or teaching I get to, I always continually come back to the fundamentals. They are a grounding force for me.
Why did you decide to get involved with this course?
My husband GuruPrem and I have been teaching the concepts of Divine Alignment and The Heart Rules (How to correctly practice Kundalini Yoga) for over two decades. We have taught all over the world and have seen the difference these teaching make in peoples lives, and the gratitude they have for them. So when Spirit Voyage was creating a fundamentals course, we knew we had to bring these teaching to those who are just beginning, as well as those who want to take a deeper look at their practice in relationship to the fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga.
What do you hope students will take away from The Fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga?
I hope students find a great start to a lifelong practice, tools to feel healthy, happy, holy, and wholehearted, a sense of empowerment to begin where they are and grow into who their heart is calling them to be. Also, I hope they feel comfortable beginning a practice at home, whether it’s a meditation or Kriya, and desire to join others who are also lifting their spirits through the various aspects of this Kundalini Yoga lifestyle!
