In our flagship 40-day online course The Fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga, Mirabai Ceiba lead us through 31 minutes of Kirtan Kriya, one of the most fundamental meditations in Kundalini Yoga. And their live performance of this mantra throughout the meditation is available exclusively for this e-course.
Here, we talk with Markus Sieber of the beautiful duo, who shares his unique entry into the Kundalini Yoga world, the evolution of his practice, favorite kriyas, and deep desire to share his experience and inspiration with others.
What led you to Kundalini Yoga? How did you discover this practice?
I discovered Kundalini Yoga for the first time when I was 23 years old in my training as an actor at a drama school in Berlin. It was taught as a breath practice in order to energize yourself, gain more self-awareness and self-esteem, and increase your creativity and intuition. From the beginning, I was very much engaged and in love with the practice. Later, when I met Angelika, I got to know the whole spiritual side of it and started to attend Summer Solstice in New Mexico and the European Yoga Festival.
How has Kundalini Yoga changed your life?
Through Kundalini Yoga, I literally experienced the power and connectedness of body, mind, and spirit, and the sense of an immense flow of life force (prana) that lies within every human being that wants to manifest and fulfill itself towards our dreams and visions in life. It taught me the ability of transcendence and expansion.
What pranayam, kriya, or meditation do you find yourself always coming back to in your personal practice? Why?
Yogi Bhajan taught so many great kriyas and mediations throughout the years, and there are plenty of books where you can dive in and explore them. But, I think it’s important to have a few which you just know by heart and make them your very own over a longer time of practice. I come always back to Kriya for Morning Sadhana, Ten Bodies, and Surya Kriya. As for the meditations, I love Ajai Alai, Ra Ma Da Sa, and Kirtan Kriya.
Why do you think learning the fundamentals of this practice is so important?
I think it can be a beautiful opportunity to get a new fresh sense of being, increase your energy level, and expand yourself into a profound experience of spirit beyond the limited imagination of yourself. Then, you might be able to realize what is truly important for you, and you might also recognize the behavior patterns that keep you stuck in your life.
Why did you decide to get involved with this course?
Spirit Voyage invited me, and I’m glad to share some of my experience with others, eventually reach people who might need it, and seek inspiration and fresh impulses.
What do you hope students will take away from The Fundamentals of Kundalini Yoga?
I hope students take away inspiration in the best sense of the word. My wish for everyone who attends would be to make the practice their very own. Bring it into your life, integrate the experience in your daily tasks, and transform through realization and awareness. Otherwise, it might be tempting to use it as just another – even “more spiritual” – form of escape.
