We’re happy to offer “Too(n) Mayray Laalan” by Dev Suroop Kaur from the album Kundalini Beat.

Here’s what Dev Suroop Kaur has to say on this song:

“Too(n) Mayray Laalan

Wow!  Taking a fresh read-through of the translation of this shabad (song), I’m reminded of how incredibly special it is.  In these four verses, Guru Arjan Dev Ji expresses such a deep longing, surrender to, and even blending into the Creator. The expression of God as a lover, best friend and companion amazes and delights me.  In all of my life and framing as a spiritual woman, I had never thought of the relationship with creation and God as so intimately personal.

I’m reflecting on how this particular shabad came into my life.  Many years ago, I experienced a particularly difficult time in my work situation.  I was caught in a political mish-mosh and was struggling to hold my head high.  At that time, I was also evolving into and accepting my self-identity as a musician.  One evening, I was thumbing through the Psyche of the Golden Shield by Bibiji to find a shabad to put to music.  The rhythm of the words of Too(n) Mayray Laalan worked nicely with the chords and music structure I was coming up with.  And the meaning!  Who could beat that?  I came up with the tune, practiced it and began playing it in Gurdwara and at other sangat events.  Sometime later, I looked at the stated effect of the shabad:  “To build relationships and take away personality conflict.  To accept the will of God and regain honor.”  Inadvertently (and luckily) I had picked the perfect prayer for my difficult work situation.  Learning and playing this shabad was helping to transform the challenging circumstances into something better and to also heal my personal pain.

Scroll forward many years later when, in 2007, Liv Singh and I were creating the album “Kundalini Beat”.  I shared this beautiful tune and shabad with him and we decided it would fit nicely on the album.  One afternoon, Liv Singh was taking a break from recording while I remained in the studio and experimented with section that we had created.  Quite magically and easily, I came up with the line “You are my lover, Lord.  My best friend.  My beloved.  I love you.”  To me, that about sums it up!”
