the guru within 300

(Part 2 of a 2 part interview with Sat Purkh! – Read part 1 here.)

For those of you who don’t already know her, Sat Purkh is a powerhouse yogini! She embodies the Queen, the Divine Feminine Goddess who walks with Truth and Grace on this Earth. Her music is an incredible reflection of her inner radiance. After hearing her newest album, The Guru Within, we wanted to share a little bit with you all about her journey with Kundalini Yoga. May her experience inspire your own, and remind you of the Goddess that you are!

Spirit Voyage: Can you tell us a little bit about who you are – what your passions are?

I’m a KRI Level Three Certified Teacher in the tradition of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. I’m also a teacher trainer in this tradition. So I think it’s safe to say that teaching is my passion. Yes, I’m a musician, but I identify as a teacher first. And I’m passionate about supporting other people in recognizing their own identity as teachers and practitioners of this amazing and sacred practice we hold.

I love good food, good books, long baths, and I’m a creature of habit: I like to go to the same restaurant and have the same lunch on the same day, every week! (Tune up on Tuesdays)

Spirit Voyage: What are three things you hope to accomplish in your lifetime?

Sat Purkh: Liberation! No really! I’d like to be known as a writer. I’d like to walk the Camino, I’d like to see Prague, and I’d like to keep making music. Oops that’s more than three.

Spirit Voyage: Can you give us a sneak peek into your creative process?

Sat Purkh: My husband and I sing together every evening. So we have a lot of time together to just play and be in the devotional space. And then occasionally the space opens up and he begins a chord progression and I begin singing a chant or a melody. Sometimes we’ll start working on lyrics together. Song of Nanak is a good example of our collaboration. Sometimes the songs just come in already whole; As Thou Keepest Me is a great example of that process. Other times I’ll here a shabad that really moves me and I’ll want to put together my own approach to it; so I take it home and just work it out over days and weeks sometimes if the pronunciation or the rhythm isn’t flowing easily. But essentially I try to stay in the flow–if it’s not coming, I let it go for a while. And then come back to it in time, or sometimes just let it go. This is only one part of my life, so I try to keep it fun!

Spirit Voyage: How did come to start practicing Kundalini Yoga?

Sat Purkh: I was working in a studio as a Hatha instructor and there was a Saturday morning class each week. I started going regularly and immediately recognized it as my path. And within a year, all the changes I had been longing to make in my life as a person and a yogi started happening. It was a game changer and remains a catalyst for my continued personal growth and happiness.

Sat_PurkhSpirit Voyage: What do you love most about your kundalini yoga practice?

Sat Purkh: Chanting! I’m not an accomplished meditator, I confess, but what I love about Shabad Guru is that it always works. And I can do what comes natural to me and still be changed! Just by singing the Name! I also love Breath of Fire and often practice it for 31 minutes at a time.

Spirit Voyage: What do you hope your listeners experience or learn as they listen to your album?

Sat Purkh: I hope they make a connection to their own inner guru. Our path is about self-initiation. As the Aquarian Age continues to roll in and people become more and more insecure, they start looking outside themselves for “gurus” or “yogis” who will show them the way. I want people to know that all they need to do is look within.

Spirit Voyage: Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Sat Purkh: I put out an album a year because every time I create an album another 2 pop into my head; plus I am getting older and I don’t know how many years my voice will last, so I’m creating as much music as I can while I can. I hope you enjoy it!

Editor’s Note: We absolutely adore Sat Purkh’s music. Her discography is rich and dynamic – you can check out the rest of her music here!
