Aromatherapy and Yoga: Essential Oils for the First Chakra

The first chakra is also called “the root chakra”, or “Muladhara”. It is located at the base of the spine, and is linked to our survival instincts (fight or flight) and our ability to ground ourselves in the physical world. The Muladhara Chakra is the seat of the coiled Kundalini, the vital Shakti, or Female energy force. It is here that our deepest and most profound potential of all aspects of the body, mind and spirit are integrated and expressed.  The first chakra is the root of all growth and awareness, and is associated with the sense of smell.  Health, Earth, home, matter and the physical body are the concerns of the first chakra. When we feel heat from a healing therapy, it is touching the first chakra.

The first chakra color is red. The element associated with the first three chakras (lower chakras) is Earth. The color red is said to represent courage, passion, and loyalty. It is also the color of the spectrum most available to the eye.

The feet and legs are controlled by the first chakra. The ankles are the water center of the first chakra. The knees hold our unique gait, and give us grace and fluidity. They are a sacred center. There is a root chakra aspect to all of the other chakras. Each chakra has a base that grounds it. When doing work above the first chakra, start with a grounding oil.

Trees that have roots deep into the Earth are beneficial to balancing the first chakra. These essential oils include sandalwood, cypress, elemi, cedarwood, and rosewood. Other essential to help with an imbalanced base chakra (issues of fear, depression and anxiety) are frankincense, clary sage, geranium, rose, melissa, vetiver, patchouli, and ylang ylang. These oils help reverse a sense of isolation from the group culture. They support the root chakra by aligning us with our connection to our physical bodies and to the earth’s body. They help us to feel secure about being on this earth, being part of society and being centerted in ourselves. The base chakra can then spin correctly, creating energy and prana as a foundation for the rest of our chakras to utilize. These oils help to awaken the coiled Kundalini; the creative energy with in us all.

Try this simple Kundalini Yoga pose, Spinal Flex, to enhance your clearing of the root chakra with essential oils.

A synergy blend for balancing the first chakra would be 3 drops vetiver, 2 drops frankincense, 2 drops patchouli, 3 drops geranium rose and 2 drop ylang ylang. Put these oils in an amber or cobalt  blue 10ml glass bottle and fill the the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil (jojoba, almond, marula). Cover and shake gently to integrate the oils.  Use for inhalation. Or anoint yourself or rub into the souls of the feet.

Try making a blend, or contact me to order a custom blend. As always, I value your feedback.
