What are the Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas?

The Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas are an opportunity for you to come together with a global sangat (spiritual community) representing over 40 countries and numbering in the thousands.  For 40 days, led by Spirit Voyage, a community comes together to practice the same Kundalini yoga meditation, mantra, or kriya.  Participation is free.  The Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas are a place for you to come home to yourself, to feel connected to a community no matter where in the world you are, to get the inspiration to stick to practices that you might not otherwise try, and to experience the incredible power of Kundalini yoga for yourself.  They are gifts to you from you, and each has its own special gift to unwrap.  During the Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas, people from different nationalities, races, faiths, genders, sexual orientations, and walks of life lay all their differences aside and celebrate their similarities as beings of light and as people of love.

Sadhanas may include instructional videos, informational articles related to the sadhana or yogic sciences, live global webcasts, and personal messages from participants and well-known teachers encouraging you to keep up, among other surprises.

What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is a physical and meditative discipline that combines postures (asanas), breath (pranayama), and the chanting of mantras. Kundalini refers to the energy that lays dormant at the base of the spine. Through the practice of yoga, this energy is raised and travels up the spine, through the chakras, creating an overall sense of well-being and a heightened sense of awareness. Traditionally, the techniques of Kundalini were only communicated from Master to disciple and through a long initiation process. In 1969, Yogi Bhajan began teaching Kundalini Yoga openly to the Western public.

Why are they 40 Days?

Within Kundalini yoga, it is suggested to maintain focus on a practice for periods of 40, 90, 120, or 1,000 days.

40 days…changes a habit

90 days…confirms a new habit

120 days…the new habit is who you are

1,000 days…mastery of the new habit

40 day practices allows the meditation to penetrate the subconscious to release certain thoughts and emotional patterns.  They also have a physical effect, as explained by Guru Singh in the video below.

Who leads them?

A variety of Kundalini yoga teachers share their wisdom during the Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas.  We have had sadhanas with Snatam Kaur, Sopurkh Singh, Mirabai Ceiba, Nirinjan Kaur, Anne Novak, Ramdesh Kaur and Mahan Kirn Kaur.  They are always hosted by Ramdesh Kaur, who holds the space, guides participants in their journeys, and helps keep everyone motivated.  Many amazing teachers supply additional information to encourage, enrich, and support the sadhanas.

How did they begin?

In September of 2010, Ramdesh Kaur of Spirit Voyage asked Harnam Singh what he wanted for his birthday.  He asked for a year of So Purkh.  She considered that if he wanted to have So Purkh for him, there were probably many men out there with the same desire, so she decided to reach out to her own network and to Spirit Voyage’s community to see if anyone wanted to join her.  She thought maybe 10 women, 20 tops would respond.  An avalanche of responses came in, and the So Purkh sadhana ended up with over 600 women (and 10 brave men!).  It began on September 14, 2010, Harnam Singh’s birthday, and coincidentally just two days before the very first Spirit Fest (now Sat Nam Fest).  Since then, the Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhanas moved beyond the So Purkh, and have included Bound Lotus, Kirtan Kriya, Japji, Burn Inner Anger, and the Radiant Body Kriya.  The sadhanas now regularly reach upwards of 2,000 participants and grow larger all the time.

How can you get involved?

Spirit Voyage regularly holds 40 Day Global Sadhanas.  Soon, you will be able to access the main Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global website to find out information about the next upcoming sadhana, the current sadhana, and past sadhanas, using the resources we have compiled.  These experiences are self-guided, so if you’d like to start the Bound Lotus Sadhana, for example, all of the same resources and information are available to you on the Bound Lotus section of the Spirit Voyage 40 Day Global Sadhana (sans the daily, real-time sadhana pep talks from Ramdesh via Facebook!)  You can also engage with your Spirit Voyage global sangat via the Spirit Voyage Facebook fan page and on the 40 Day Global Sadhana specific discussion boards on the fan page, where you can read the stories of your peers, share your own, and get answers to your questions.
