Attending live yoga classes is awesome. The physical presence of a teacher, with their vast experience and watchful eyes, makes your practice feel secure. The presence of the students around you connects you to a community of people who share your love of yoga. But sometimes, for many reasons, practicing on your own is necessary. In those situations, yoga dvds can be incredibly helpful. If you need a motivational boost, or you don’t have a way to get to classes regularly, you can count on yoga dvds to support your practice. If you’ve never tried it before, here are 5 reasons to consider checking out a yoga dvd.
Brings yoga to you. For people who don’t have access to regular classes, practicing at home is your regular class. With several good yoga dvds, you can practice regularly and keep things varied. Using a dvd also means you can practice with “famous” teachers like Gurmukh, Shiva Rea, and Rodney Yee as often as you like, without leaving the comfort of your home!
Sadhana. If you only have 1 yoga dvd, that’s a great thing. Commit to practicing with it daily for 40 or 90 days and you’re sure to see results. Becoming so familiar with a practice allows you to turn your attention inward, to the subtle messages and changes in your body. Whether you practice Kundalini yoga or vinyasa, making it a point to work with your dvd daily for a set amount of time is a fantastic way to learn more about your body and your practice.
Supplement to class. Practicing yoga once a week in class is the way many people start. After a while, some want to go deeper but may not have the time or financial resources to attend class more than once a week. Getting a yoga dvd or two means you can practice more often, and go deeper in your practice.
Practice is planned out for you. Even seasoned yogis may sometimes struggle with what to do once they are on their mat. You know your body wants to practice, you just can’t quite figure out how to fill your practice time. Using a yoga dvd takes the pressure off, allowing you to put your analytical mind on the back burner and follow along with the teacher on the screen. You don’t have to get motivated to do anything but roll out your mat, because the teacher has done all of the planning for you.
Dvds are varied. Particularly with individual yoga poses, many people have their favorites and least favorites. Maybe you love camel, but hate archer. In your own practice, your spend a lot of time doing the poses you love, and minimize (or skip completely) the things you don’t enjoy. Practicing along with a dvd means you may find yourself practicing poses you wouldn’t normally choose. This is incredibly good for your body and mind, because often the poses we dislike are the ones that work areas that need it most.
Bonus: The catalog of yoga dvds in the world is incredibly diverse. With a dvd, any yogi can experience a different style of yoga with the push of a button. Trying something new every now and then keeps your practice fresh and your mind open!
